Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a group method of Bible study to discover who God is, who we are, how to live life and how to share him with others. It encourages discipleship by enables people to read the Bible, discover what it has to say to them and put it in to practice. Simple, memorable questions allow participants to understand the character of God, encourage them to obey what they are learning and help them to share it with others.
Here’s the format:
Identify a passage of Scripture to study together. Read the passage ahead of your group meeting.
LIFE TOGETHER
• What is one thing you are thankful for?
• What is one thing you are concerned or stressed about?
• How did you do with your “I will” … from our previous time together?
LEARN TOGETHER
• Read through the passage and summarize it in your own words.
• What do you learn about God, His character, His plan?
• What do you learn about people and specifically yourself?
LIVING IT OUT
• How will I respond in obedience to what I have learned?
“This week I will commit to …” (make it practical and specific)
• Who can I share with this week one thing I learned from the Bible?
• Is there a need in our group we can respond to?
• Spend time praying for one another.
COVENANT OF COMMITMENT
In our small group we each commit, with God’s help, to grow as a disciple of Jesus. We commit to encourage each other, to prioritize our appointed meeting times, to read the passage ahead of time, to keep personal information shared confidential, and to be accountable to one another (using our weekly “I wills”). We will look for opportunities to share what we are learning with others who do not yet know Jesus and to multiply our small group when our group reaches 12 people.
